Game of Thrones

Stormborn

July 24th, 2017

This late in the game, I don't expect at any point Game of Thrones to slow down, and I don't expect at any point Game of Thrones to be anything less than outstanding week in week out. If reports are to be believed, we are now only 11 episodes from the conclusion of the entire show, and we are rapidly steering towards that moment. However, in true Game of Thrones style, we all know there will be many twists and turns along the way that no one saw coming. The first of these is this weeks epic final scene. Euron Greyjoy's epic battle against his neice Yara on their way to Dorne to get the Dornish Army to help with Daenerys and her siege of Winterfell.

In dark rooms of Dragonstone is where we spend the majority of this weeks episode, or where are lot of the story move forward. Dany has only just stepped foot in Winterfell, after many years of trying, but she is wasting no time in getting a plan together to take over the Seven Kingdoms along with the Dornish, The Greyjoys and Tyrells, and as Dany hopes Jon and the power of the North. Tyrion is back to his best after a background part in last weeks epic final scene, he plays the room brilliantly, giving everyone Dany's plan to rule the seven kingdoms and jumping in with Varys and Melisandre when needed. I can't help feel how awesome he would have been at ruling for himself if he was given chance.

I know there was a lot in this episode as always, but I think these scenes in Dragonstone really stand out for me because you really do get the sense of how much it is going to kick off in the next 5 weeks this year and the final epiodes next year. And wether you have watched the show since the very beginning, you started on the books or spent the last 3 months catching up on 60 episodes ready for last week, we can all agree that these are some exciting moments we are building too, and I for one cannot wait.

We also got a few good scenes in Oldtown and King's Landing. We saw in the latter that Cersei is trying to round up the numbers to help her dwindling army against the growing threat of Dany and her army. We also saw the way they plan to stop her dragons (not unlike The Hobbit). In Oldtown we see Sam try and cure Jorah of his greyscale in a very graphical and brilliant way. I don't know how true the Dragonglass theory is I saw banded around last week, but I wonder how long until that gets stumbled upon.

We spent the rest of this episode with the 3 remaining Stark children. Jon deciding to go a meet Dany, partly due to Sam's message about the Dragonglass and giving Sansa the rule of the North in Jon's absence. I'm happy that Sansa's character has stopped being that whiney child we have got for much of the show, but I'm not sure how much more of 'moral high ground whiney' Sansa I'll be able to cope with.

In the finals scenes of this weeks episodes we follow the footsteps of Arya Stark, but more exciting of all we got the return of two of Game of Thrones older character's Hot Pie, who Arya meets at an Inn in the Riverlands. This was a nice little reuinon that I think a lot of people have been hinting at for a while, he also acts a trusted messanger that Jon has returned to Winterfell, turning Arya back north, home to be reunited with her brother and Sanda (who I presume she doesn't know about). The second reunion is with he old Direwold Nymeria. I enjoyed both of these little nods, even if we don't see them again. I feel it's the creators giving a final goodbye to all these characters that we brought to life many years ago.

9/10 - I'm not sure if we're going to be given an episode of Game of Thrones between now and the end that doesn't deserve full marks, and until we do get that episode, i'm going to keep riding this awesome wave that is Game of Thrones. Nothing that has hit our screens has ever been this consistently brilliant, and I think we are going to struggle to find another one that hits that high again week after week, year after year.
